Background

Holy Grail has released a unique series of products with design of our friend and mentor – the Swedish design icon Olle Eksell. This is a loving tribute to the man behind the now classic Mazetti-eyes. Over the years, we often talked about developing a small product line together with Olle Eksell. This is the result, a tasteful collection of selected products in his honor. At the same time olleeksell.se was born, a digital tribute where all who love good design and advertising history can find information about one of its greatest innovators. The focus is to continue to spread the mission of the design visionary Olle Eksell, his life and his beliefs.

This is Olle Eksell

Olle Eksell (1918-2007) one of Sweden’s most prominent designers.

In 1946, the newly married couple Ruthel and Olle Eksell traveled with the Drottningholm ship to USA to study at the Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles. In LA and NYC, Olle came in contact with contemporary designers such as Paul Rand, Donald Kubly, Alvin Lustig and Lester Beall. A close friendship developed between Paul Rand and Olle that lasted throughout their lives. They visited each other frequently and often discussed new ideas and design processes.

Besides being an excellent designer and writer, Olle Eksell was a great visionary. This can be seen in his book Design = Ekonomi (1964) where he in a clear and elegant way explain the important relationship between design and economy. ¨Good design is not just aesthetic – it is also good economy. Good design is not just cool – it is bloody serious.

In 2011 the Swedish Government presented Olle with an honorary Professorship for his significant contribution to the field of Design. Driven by joy and curiosity, Olle loved his work and never stopped creating.
